Flashback Friday: Gang Starr

Gang-Starr-moment of truth

Today’s Flashback takes us back to 1998, when Gang Starr released Moment of Truth. Guru and DJ Premier started making music together under the alias Gang Starr when they first met in 1989. You have probably all heard their single Work taken from this album, but have you listen to the other tracks? Well, now is the time to do so. Here is an other classic to add to your rap library. Apparently DJ Premier is working on a posthumous DVD of Gang Starr, it should be available in 2013.

My Best Fiend – In Ghostlike Fading

MYBESTFIEND_IGF_alternate-800_800

My Best Fiend is an american band out of brooklyn, NY. Today, I stumbled on their last album; In Ghostlike Fading.  A pretty useful album if you are trying to carve a mountain of information in the back of your brain. But also very pleasant to listen to while you stare inattentively at the wall in front of you. Either way, what i’m trying to say is that it’s great to listen to while you study.

Galt MacDermot ‎– Up From The Basement Unreleased Tracks

cm_49_img0028

It’s Christmas and on this holly day I’ve got a small present for you all. Have you ever heard of Galt MacDermot ? Probably not, but you might have heard some of his songs before, well at least parts of them. This canadian composer has been sampled by a lot of hip-hop artists. For example, you might recognize Ripped Open by Metal Explosions from the famous song C’Mon Wit Da Git Down by Artifacts. Or maybe you have seen his musicals: Hair and Two Gentlemen of Verona. The album featured today is very rare, it was definitely not easy to get by. Up From The Basement Unreleased Tracks gathers, like the title says, a bunch of unreleased track from Galt’s career. I hope you’ll appreciate the softness of his music. Joyeux Noël.

Home Brew – Home Brew

2984473079-1

I seriously have no idea how this release slipped underneath my ears for so long. I should have found it 7 months ago when it first came out. Home Brew put out one of the best rap album of the year, their self titled album holds everything to please your dirty ears. The beats are infused with jazzy sounds reminding us of the golden era. This alone could have worked, but no, they deliver intelligent lyrics on top of these to give us one of the best album of the year. I highly recommend to buy it, you won’t be disappointed, not even a bit.
